Formentera, pearl of the Mediterranean Sea
Do we have to visit Formentera for a day? A question I get at a frequently base. I can answer very directly; Yes definitely!
Formentera is the smallest island from the balearic islands, it’s beautiful, it’s peaceful and it’s authentic. I had heard from people it must be beautiful, and over and over again I saw these beautiful photos of this island with beautiful white beaches and coral at the sea. A pearl at the mediterranean sea. That made I wanted to visit this island as well.
Take the ferry to Formentera
We went with the ferry from Ibiza Town to Formentera for a day. You can take different boats from different places, from example from Es Canar, Santa Eularia, Cala Llonga, Fiqueretas, San Antonio and like we did, from the harbor at Ibiza Town. My advise is to go from Ibiza Town because you can take different ferries from here and also you have more choice about the time schedule. If you want to prepare your trip online the easiest way to use is the following webpage; www.directferries.co.uk
You will find all the information from the different companies that will go to Formentera and back. You can order your tickets online, but you can do that at the office at the harbor as well. In general it takes half an hour from Ibiza Town to Formentera.
It’s a nice boat trip, because your leaving from the harbor of Ibiza Town, so you have a excellent view at the old town from the water when leaving or at arrival. Then the ferry will follow it’s way next to the coastline from Ibiza with view on Figueretas and Playa den Bossa and after that you will get the view at beautiful Es Vedra. And we were lucky, because we even got some dolphins swimming next to our boat. How much more can you wish for?
La Savina
When you arrive at Formentera, the ferry will stop at the harbor of La Savina. There are restaurants, little bars and shops and a lot of possibilities to rent a car, bicycle, E bike or scooter.
We rented a bicycle , and I think that’s the best way to explore the island with, or take a scooter.
Natural Parc Ses Salines
From the harbor we went to Natural Parc Sea Salines. A beautiful area of nature with beautiful beaches and dunes and…the coral I wanted to see. ( you will find it at Ibiza as well, but less than at Formentera ) It’s kind of weird because you can see Ibiza in front of the island, but it seems like the water is more blue here and the beaches are more white, beautiful!! And especially with the coral at the waterside. Just like you have the salt works in Ibiza, they used to be here as well in the past.
Es Pujols
From the natural parc we went in direction of Es Pujols. What a nice village! With a very relaxed ambient, some nice stores and a nice boulevard with some restaurants and nice terraces it was nice spending some time here and have a drink at one of the terraces, with a lovely view at the beach, the nice little boathouses and again the beautiful tropical color of the water.
Es Caló
After our nice break at Es Pujols we took off in direction of Es Caló. The only thing that I thought was a bit disappointing is your biking on the road next to the cars. On the left side of the road tere are some beautiful beaches, so we stopped there and walked into the dunes to take a look.
Platja Es Caló and Calo Beach are the names of those beaches, and again those are surrounded with the beautiful tropical blue color of the sea. So much space here at the beach, not much tourism and a lot of peace!
Back on our bikes, and up on our way to Es Caló we had to stood up the hills, because I’m not some experienced cyclist ;-). I wanted to go there because that’s THE place to be when you like fish. And I love fish. It’s a fishers village caused by monks. It’s a very small village, but very cosy and next to the beach you’ll find the fish restaurants. We have very much enjoyed our fishplates as well as the view at Restaurante Es Caló. I can recommend it!
With a good feeling we continued our way back on the bike in direction of Es Pujols, and through Sant Francesc Xavier to the harbor. On the way my chain got of the bike and after some drudgery, I got it back where it belonged. ( Thank god we were already up the hill, so we had the hardest part of the way already behind us ) But it didn’t feel good anyway so we didn’t stop anymore at Sant Francesc Xavier. It was already late and we wanted to catch the ferry at a particular time. So this town stays on my list to visit the next time when we go to Formentera.
Anyhow it was a lovely day! On our way back at the ferry we enjoyed the sun at the sundeck outside and when we arrived at Ibiza Town we finished the day with a drink at the terrace from Cappuccino, one of my favorite spots in town with a lovely view at the harbor and the old town.
It was a beautiful day! With sweet memories!
